Christmas in the Tropics

For me
Christmas is
A roasted chicken,
Big one
Turkeys are hard to find

forks & knives,
once a year
an unsuccessful attempt!

White snow,
like on TV
inside the freezer
I wana eat

A Santa Claus,
නත්තල් සීයා
whom I used to call Fanta
far from an island

A Christmas tree,
replaced by
a green bamboo tree
not enough leaves!

Delta toffees gifts,
hanging on the tree
outside the house
meting to December sun

Yellow Hay,
from the village paddy fields
cardboard stars,
pastel coloured

Baby, Mother & Father,
"A baby was born today",
not in a hospital
sung out of tune

For me,
Christmas is
a childhood,
that rings a bell
The only jingling bell...
